In what would become commonplace, Erik Guay the Queb├ęcois downhiller won his first World Cup, picking up the first victory for a Canadian in men’s Garmisch downhill since 1994. At just 25-year-old Guay’s breakthrough had been delayed by knee injuries. He would go on to 25 podium finishes and five victories on the World Cup circuit stands as a Canadian record which may never be broken.
