John Kucera won the gold medal in the downhill at the 2009 FIS Alpine World Ski Championships in Val-d’Isère, France, to become the first Canadian man to win the event. The margin of victory was only .04 seconds ahead of Didier Cuche of Switzerland. The event was held on La Face de Bellevarde built for the 1992 Winter Olympics. Kucera’s teammate Michael Janyk was third in the slalom eight days later.
